- Hi Glenn:
-
- I too once owned a Sportster 33.6 model and returned it perhaps because of a
- problem you are having and I did have. The problem,as I understand it, is
- relatively simple--the Sporster V.34+ will not receive faxes from ANY fax
- machine that does not issue its negotiation tone first. You probably have
- experienced this on the connects where you experience a problem. The
- Sportster will answer the call, appear to start the receive process, but
- then there is total silence followed by a disconnect. This only happens
- when the sending machine does not issue its tone first. It has been
- reported on boards elsewhere that the ITU(T?) faxing negotaition protocol
- changed this past year, and the new standard requires the sending machine to
- issue the first tone. Unfortunately, as it has been reported, USR only
- instituted the new standard in the current Sporster, so the new Sporster is
- not backward compatible with any fax that doesn't meet the current standard,
- i.e. doesn't issue the tone first.
-
- Before returning my modem, I wrote to USR stating the reception problem,
- stating the reported reason, and asking them for any help since I wanted to
- keep the modem. USR responded promptly, but did not deny the "problem."
- Instead they said they couldn't help it if any fax machine doesn't meet the
- current standard--some help since those machines constituted 4 of 5 machines
- I needed to connect with! I bought a Motorola Lifestyle and immediately
- received faxes from the machines from which the Sproster could
- not--apparently Motorola was not as "helpless" as USR against those
- nonconformists. E-mail me if you want more feedback, but USR offered no
- support of any kind--I have never been treated that way by any reputable
- firm selling a relatively expensive item. The terrible thing is that I
- liked the Sporster's data performance and really wanted to keep the modem.
- Oh well...and good luck (you'll probably need it).
